Oasis – The Best Ever?

It is no question that Oasis are one of the best bands of all time, but can we go as far as saying they are the best ever?

Some say The Beatles, some say The Rolling Stones and others say Oasis. In my opinion no one has ever released a better debut album than ‘Definitely Maybe’ but their albums did seem to go downhill after ‘Be Here Now.’

But any band that wins 15 NME Awards, 9 Q Awards, 6 Brit Awards, one which was for outstanding contribution to music in 2007 and one for best album of the last 30 years with ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory’ and 4 MTV Europe Music Awards has to be a contender for the best band ever, surely?

After spending 765 weeks in the top 75 singles and albums chart Oasis were given a Guinness World Record for being the most successful act in the UK between 1995 and 2005 despite tough competition from Britpop rivals Blur.

It’s not only the numerous awards or the fact that NME have titled Noel Gallagher has ‘God Like’ and Liam Gallagher ‘the ultimate frontman’ it’s the fact that they have so many songs that are huge. Not just the stereotypical ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ but also the likes of ‘Supersonic’, ‘Whatever’, ‘Live Forever’ and ‘Champagne Supernova.’ All these songs get crowds going, not only at Oasis gigs but at festivals and in clubs.

Oasis will also be fondly remembered throughout history for their attitude and choice of words in interviews. Noel Gallagher once famously said to the Observer that he hope Damon Albarn and Alex James, of Britpop rivals Blur, would ‘catch AIDS and die.’

If you look throughout the web there are hundreds and hundreds of famous Gallagher brother quotes that nobody else would really get away with but because it’s the Gallagher’s people just shrug and get on with it.

Oasis were inspired by many, The Beatles and Stone Roses mainly but also The Who, Nirvana and Neil Young also heavily influenced them. But Oasis also inspired many to pick up a guitar and microphone and become a musician.

Sergio Pizzorno, of Kasabian, said once at the FA Cup draw that it wasn’t cool to play guitar until Noel Gallagher played guitar. They also influenced/inspired: The Kooks, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, The Enemy, Coldplay, The Strokes, The Coral and more.

The Killers also performed ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ in honour of Oasis at V Festival 2012. Saying this was for ‘one of the greatest British bands ever.’

I feel it is all about opinion. People will say Blur were better than Oasis. People think The Beatles are the best ever, some think The Rolling Stones are. I think it’s a tough one, but Oasis are definitely up there with the very best of all time and their legacy will go on for many years to come.
